By car. From Naha Airport, head north on Route 58 for about 35–40 minutes and turn left at the Kuwae intersection. Ignore any instruction to look for the Ferris wheel.

By bus from Naha city. Routes 20, 28 or 29 to the Kuwae stop, then three minutes on foot.

By bus from the airport. Route 120 to Kuwae: about an hour, roughly ¥700.

By taxi. About 45 minutes from the airport, roughly ¥3,500–4,000.

Airport limousine bus. Buy at the counter on the first floor of the terminal and get off at The Beach Tower Okinawa, three minutes' walk away. This is the simplest option with luggage.

Depot Island is the open-air mall complex running from the American Village area through to the Fisherina waterfront. Palms and bougainvillea, deliberately weathered pastel buildings, and a seafront boardwalk finished in 2018 with blue-painted tetrapods along it. Seen from the water, the whole row looks like it's floating.

It is not one building. Shops are spread across a dozen named blocks: Depot Island Building A through E, Depot Central, Distortion Seaside, Oak Fashion, American Depot, Fashion Plaza. Addresses in this guide use those block names because that is how everything here is signposted.

Chatan faces west, which is the whole point. The sun goes down over the East China Sea directly in front of the seawall, and the boardwalk fills up for it. No ticket, no reservation, just turn up before the light goes.

Then the district changes. The illuminations come on, the neon along American Depot and SOHO lights up, and the same streets you walked in the afternoon read completely differently. If you only have one slot for this place, make it 4pm to 8pm rather than the middle of the day.

Chatan is roughly halfway up the west coast, about 40 minutes from the airport, and inside 90 minutes of both Churaumi Aquarium in the north and the southern war memorial sites. If you don't want to change hotels mid-trip, it's the most defensible single base on the island.

It's also one of the few places in Okinawa where you can eat, drink and walk home without driving, which matters more than it sounds on an island where almost everything else requires a car.

Chatan spent the post-war decades with most of its usable land inside US military facilities. American Village exists because some of that land came back. The town reclaimed and redeveloped it from the 1980s onward, and rather than erase the American history it leaned into it.

The model was explicitly California's Seaport Village, an open-air seaside retail district rather than an enclosed mall. It was built out in phases, which is why it reads as a collection of separate blocks rather than one designed whole, and why the architecture jumps between Mediterranean, Californian and Okinawan in the space of fifty metres.

That mix isn't accidental either. Red Okinawan roof tile, shisa on the gateposts and awamori bars sit alongside diners and surf shops. The district is the clearest single illustration of what seventy years of American presence has actually done to Okinawan culture: not replaced it, but grown into it.

The other half of that story is the base itself, seen from a public observation deck a few kilometres inland. The roadside station at Kadena is a twenty-minute drive away.
