Nakijin sits at the base of the Motobu peninsula, between Churaumi Aquarium and the east coast road. Most people pass through it on the way to somewhere else, which is a shame, because it holds the best castle ruins in Okinawa and the bridge that everyone photographs.

The castle is the reason to stop. Its walls are not straight: they follow the ridge in long curves, and from the upper enclosure you look straight out over the sea. It is a different kind of ruin from Shuri: older, rougher, and never rebuilt.

The castle price is the one to watch. It went from ¥600 to ¥1,000 on 1 September 2025, and a large number of English pages, including guides updated since, still quote the old figure. If you are budgeting for a family, that is a meaningful difference.

Allow an hour. The path climbs steadily through a series of enclosures, and the surface is old stone. Not difficult, but not flat either. Sensible shoes matter more than they usually do at a Japanese castle site.

Nakijin was the seat of the northern kingdom of Hokuzan, defeated in 1416 when Okinawa was unified. It was never rebuilt afterwards, which is why what you walk through is the original masonry rather than a reconstruction. That is the difference from Shuri, and it is worth knowing before you arrive.

The best light is late afternoon, when the walls throw shadows down the slope and the sea behind them turns.

Where to stop and eat

Rikarika Warumi sits at the foot of Warumi Bridge, on the road between the castle and Kouri Island. The rooftop is free and looks straight down the strait, and since you cannot stop on the bridge itself, this is effectively the only place to look at it properly.

Upstairs there is a terrace café and a Wagyu restaurant, with a burger counter and a produce store below. It is a genuine stop rather than a photo opportunity: the three people who run it describe their speciality as reviving roadside stations that were not working.

The So-re farm market is the alternative if you want a set lunch rather than a burger, but note it closes at 14:00 and is shut on Mondays.

Getting there

By car

About 25 minutes east of Churaumi Aquarium, or an hour from Kyoda IC at the end of the expressway. The castle, Warumi Bridge and Kouri are all within fifteen minutes of each other.

Parking is free at all of them.

By bus

The Yanbaru Express Bus Sanshima line serves the village, stopping at DRIVE IN Rikarika Warumi and Kouri Island Station Sorahashi. Services are spaced across the day rather than hourly.

Pair it with

Motobu and Churaumi are 25 minutes west, which makes castle-plus-aquarium a realistic single day if you start early.

Buy the aquarium and castle vouchers together at Kyoda on the way up.

Questions

How much is Nakijin Castle?+

¥1,000 for adults since 1 September 2025, ¥500 for junior and senior high students, free for elementary age and under. Groups of ten or more pay ¥800. A great many English guides still say ¥600, which was the price before the change. Michi-no-Eki Kyoda sells a voucher at ¥800.

What time does the castle open?+

8:00–18:00 from January to April and September to December, last entry 17:30. From May to August it stays open to 19:00, last entry 18:30. Open year-round apart from occasional unscheduled closures. Allow an hour to walk it.

Is the Kouri Bridge free?+

Yes: 1,960 metres, opened in 2005, no toll. There is parking at both ends. You cannot stop on the bridge itself, so if you want the view, use the rooftop at Rikarika Warumi or the beach at the island end.

Is Kouri Ocean Tower worth ¥1,000?+

It depends what you want. It is a paid viewpoint with a shell museum and a shop, reached by an automated cart. The view is genuinely good. But the free rooftop at Rikarika Warumi and the beach at the bridge give you much of the same water for nothing, so if budget matters, spend the ¥1,000 on the castle instead.

When is the cherry blossom?+

Late January into February. Okinawan cherry blossom opens earlier than anywhere else in Japan, and Nakijin Castle is the best-known place to see it, which also makes it the most crowded time of year here. Go early in the day if you come then.
